PORTAGE | Monthly memorial services to honor those killed in the military will begin April 1.
Portage resident and veteran Walter White received approval from the Board of Works this week to hold a monthly service at the south end of Gilbert Park on Willowcreek Road at 5 p.m. the first Monday of every month.
White previously received permission from the Portage's Park Board.
White said the service will consist of an opening invocation, the reading of names of those who died in the service of their country during the last month, including their branch of the service and their hometown, a gun salute and a closing prayer.
The service, he estimated, will last about 30 minutes.
"This is the least we can do to honor these people who are fighting and dying," White said.
