VALPARAISO | A Portage woman has been charged with felony neglect on accusations of allowing her young daughter to miss too much school over the past few years.

Sonja Hale, 45, of 2792 Oakwood St., is accused of allowing her elementary school-aged daughter to miss 19 days (four excused) during the 2010-11 school year, 43 days (19 excused) in 2011-12 and 11 days (three excused) so far in 2012-13, according to charging documents.

The case was brought to the attention of the juvenile probation department by Project ATTEND, which is a truancy diversion program.

The probation department said it attempted to meet with Hale on three occasions in May, but she canceled before each. She then showed up 45 minutes late to a fourth scheduled date.

Hale was sent a letter in July reminding her of her daughter's status with Project ATTEND for the upcoming school year, according to court documents. She is accused of failing to appear at a November meeting to discuss the ongoing problem.

"Sonja M. Hale has not been receptive or compliant to any of these attempts," according the charging documents.

The case has been assigned to Porter Superior Court Judge Roger Bradford, and bond is set at $8,500 surety or $1,000 cash.
