PORTAGE | Former Portage High School teacher and swim coach Ralph Mundt has been hired as the Portage Parks Department's new sports director.
Mundt spent 28 years as a government and economics teacher as well as swim coach in Portage. He recently retired as athletic director at Calumet High School, a position he held since 2009.
"It was just the opportunity to be back home, and I like to work," Mundt said Friday about the new job.
As sports director, Mundt will coordinate the sports-related activities at the parks department. He said the position is like being an athletic director for the parks department.
He began working the full-time position on Aug. 5.
"We are happy to have Ralph join the team here at the parks department," said Jenny Orsburn, parks superintendent. "We are confident with his knowledge and background that he will grow our sports programs and make sure we continue to have the best facilities. He has such a great sense of Portage community pride."
Mundt said he is presently working with the soccer league director on an indoor youth soccer league.
Mundt's wife, Beverly, is a teacher in the Portage Township Schools, as well as his two sons, Greg and Eric.
