PORTAGE | A 15-year-old Portage boy went missing in Lake Michigan on Sunday night while swimming with friends near the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk site of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
Law enforcement officials from more than eight departments began searching for Corey McFry after he went missing in the water, according to an Indiana Department of Natural Resources news release.
A group he had gone out with swam out into the lake when a girl he was with turned around to say something to McFry and noticed he was gone, Portage police Sgt. Keith Hughes said.
She was about 150 yards offshore and frantically swam in to call 911 about 5:30 p.m. The group had been on a sand bar prior to the McFry going missing.
According to the DNR, the National Weather Service had issued a rip current risk advisory for Sunday afternoon that was slated to last until Monday morning with waves 4 to 5 feet high.
The Coast Guard, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, National Park Service as well as local fire and police officials swept through the area looking for McFry with no success.
As darkness settled in on the beach, officials wrapped up the search for the night.
Hughes said he expects the agencies to be back out in the morning to continue the search.
