Portage parks

The Portage Parks Department offers a variety of programs. The office is at 2100 Willowcreek Road. Call (219) 762-1675.

Woodland Park preschool

There are openings for Tuesday and Thursday afternoon class, for ages 3 and 4. There is a one-time $20 nonrefundable registration fee. Class tuition is $70 per month for residents and $80 for nonresidents and is due by the first of each month. Bring a copy of the student's birth certificate.

Yule craft show vendors

The price is $45 for a 10-foot by 10-foot booth. The fair is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at Woodland Park. Entry forms are available at the park office or call (219) 762-1675.

Young Artists

Young Artists at Sunset Hill Farm County Park meets from 1 to 2 p.m. the second Saturday of the month. There is an $8 charge. Youth painting instruction, led by instructor Shirley Massey, is for all skill levels, where the focus of the project is different each month. Participants will create and take home their project the same day.

Winter lights

Winter lights drive thru display is 5 to 9 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and also open Thanksgiving Day and New Year's Day, at Sunset Hill Farm County Park, 774 Meridian Road, Valparaiso.

Pysanky Eggs

Learn the art of making Pysanky eggs from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 8. cost is $20. Pysanky uses a wax-resistant (batik) method to dye eggs resulting in striking colors and elaborate detail.  All ages are invited to this class, taught by instructor Susan Swanson, which will offer the chance to create a beautiful egg of your own.

Acrylic Painting Lessons

Painting lessons are ofered 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 2 at South Haven Public Library.  All skill levels are welcome to attend this art class under the guidance of an experienced instructor.  A painting surface will be provided. 

Senior Hike

Take a senior hike from 3 to 4 p.m. Dec. 4 at Sunset Hill Farm. The program will be indoors with a short hike following the presentation.

Valparaiso parks

Valparaiso parks officials offer many activities this month. Call (219) 462-5144, visit www.valpoparks.org or visit the parks office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 3210 N. Campbell St.

Kinder Ready’s next session

Get children ready for kindergarten. Price is $68 or $80 for a nine-week session.

Kinder Ready’s next session in December

Get children ready for kindergarten at this noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday class, Dec. 2 to 20. The “Investigator Club” curriculum offers structured lesson plans with a full assessment program to ensure success for every child with the usual Cottage flare for fun.Price is $68/80 for this 9 week session.

Youth volleyball signup

First through sixth-graders can learn and play volleyball this winter in this eight-week program. VU volleyball players will run the practices. All practices and games are at The Valparaiso Boys & Girls Club. The price is $65/$77 ($35 less if a member of The Boys & Girls Club).

Golf simulator upgrade

Play the fully upgraded golf simulators at Creekside, 2355 Clifford Road. State of the art software and hardware have replaced the existing system, with more than 30 course options to play.

Youth Recreation Intern needed

Gain experience while getting college credit, starting in spring or summer season. Essential job functions include planning, coordinating, and supervising youth sports programs and leagues for youth. Ready for Winter Nature Investigators

This class is tailored for 3- to 5- year olds at Discovery Cottage, exploring all the wonders that nature has to offer. Class is Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Dec. 5 to 19. Cost is $25/37. Discovery Cottage is located at 1155 Harrison.

Friday Night Science Club

All About Light is the theme for the Dec. 13 class that provides safe and fun projects to get kids excited about science! The science class is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Discovery Cottage and is $35/47 per person.

Building with Candy

The Little Builders class will have hands-on holiday fun constructing with candy, for ages to 3 to 5 year. Class is from noon to 2 p.m.Tuesdays, Dec. 3-17 for a price of $34/46.

Story Book Alive

This class is for ages 6 to 9 years where they bring their favorite stories to life with crafts, games and music. This group meets 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays at Discovery Cottage.
