Portage parks

The Portage Parks Department offers a variety of programs. The office is at 2100 Willowcreek Road. Call (219) 762-1675.

Annual Daddy-Daughter Dance

The annual dance is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 7 at Woodland Park, 2100 Willowcreek Road, in Oakwood Hall. Cost is $40 per couple; $15 per additional daughter. The evening includes dinner, beverage, dessert, entertainment, a corsage and a memoir photo. Couples must register with the Portage Parks Department by Jan. 31.

Woodland Park preschool

There are openings for Tuesday and Thursday afternoon class, for ages 3 and 4. There is a one-time $20 nonrefundable registration fee. Class tuition is $70 per month for residents and $80 for nonresidents. It is due by the first of each month. Bring a copy of the student's birth certificate.

Valparaiso parks

Valparaiso parks officials offer many activities this month. Call (219) 462-5144, visit www.valpoparks.org or visit the parks office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 3210 N. Campbell St.

Dodgeball tourney

Registration is open for the first Dodgeball Tourney for junior high and high school age groups for the 4 p.m. Tourney on March 2 at VHS Field House. Register by Feb. 14.

Latin Dance Class

Spice up Monday nights and learn the hottest Latin dances like salsa, merengue and cha cha. Classes run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 through March 24 at the Village Park Enrichment Center, 601 Beech St. Open to ages 16 and older. Price per couple is $75/87; individuals are $40/52. Register by Jan. 24.

Spring Soccer Youth Coed League

Sign up for Coed Spring Soccer leagues for ages 3 through 12. The season runs early April through mid-May. Kids will learn progressive soccer skills, sportsmanship and healthy competition. All games are on Saturdays and officiated by parks staff. Practices are set by volunteer coaches. Price is $47/59; register by Feb. 28.

Winter Skills Sessions

The Valparaiso University Men’s Soccer is partnering with Valpo Parks to teach a Sunday winter skills camp lead by volunteer coaches and parks staff. The camps will focus on individual and team development. The Soccer Skills camp will take place on each Sunday in February (maximum 35 participants). Price is $15 or $27; there is no charge for youth that are registered in 2014 Valpo Parks sports programs. Register by Friday.

Wiffle Ball Tourney

March Mayhem Wiffle Ball Tourney takes place on March 9 and 16. Teams of four to seven players (high school and college age) compete in this new winter tourney. Captain’s meeting and tourney draw take place on March 5 at 4 p.m. Awards for best team name (preapproved), best sportsmanship, and tourney champion. Price is $50 per team; register by Feb. 26.

Youth Recreation Intern Needed

Gain experience while getting college credit, starting in spring or summer season. Essential job functions include planning, coordinating, and supervising youth sports programs and leagues for youth. This position will work with recreation staff in implementing and maintaining youth recreation programs. For full details contact Youth Program Director Phil Blasko at pblasko@valpo.us.
