PORTAGE | Police believe a man trusted with babysitting his former girlfriend's two daughters molested the girls.
David Lopez, 35, with addresses in Whiting and Burns Harbor, is charged with three felony counts of child molesting, according to documents filed earlier this month in Porter Superior Court.
According to court documents, in January, a woman told Portage police her two daughters reported being touched by Lopez, her former boyfriend. The woman said the incidents happened after he moved out of her home in December 2010, when he would babysit her daughters while she worked.
During a February interview with police and an investigator with the Indiana Department of Child Services, the 7-year-old girl reportedly was quiet when asked about what happened, but ultimately said that one night while she was asleep in her mother's bed, Lopez put his hand underneath her nightgown and fondled her.
The girl reportedly told investigators she was afraid to tell her mother because she thought she would get in trouble.
Police said in a separate interview her 11-year-old sister said while babysitting them one night, Lopez came into her mother's room while she was watching television and put his hand underneath her underwear and rubbed her genitals.
She said she didn't tell anyone until one day she and her sister talked about it while playing with their dolls.
Police interviewed Lopez, who they said cried and asked officers how the investigation was going to affect his future with his own children. Police said during their interview, the man never specifically asked what he was being accused of doing, but denied doing "this."
Lopez was arrested without incident and is awaiting a July trial.
