PORTAGE | A Portage man was arrested Wednesday morning after police said he slapped a 71-year-old man he thought was a peeping Tom.

Brandon Taylor, 35, was charged with battery and possession of marijuana.

Police were called about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday to a home in the 2800 block of Russell Street for a report of a man looking into a bathroom window at a teenage girl.

Taylor went to confront the man in the school yard at Central Elementary, threatened him with a hammer, slapped him in the face hard enough to knock out his hearing aid and tackled the man, police said.

When an officer arrived, Taylor was making “sporadic movements” so the officer patted him down to check for weapons, police said.

The officer found a hammer in the sleeve of Taylor’s hooded sweatshirt and a bag of marijuana in his pants pockets.

The woman who called police said her granddaughter saw the man in the past on nearby school property and said he was looking in their bathroom window when she was getting out of the shower. They showed police a photo taken of the man on school property. When the caller saw the man at the school again Wednesday morning, she immediately told Taylor and called police.

Portage police Sgt. Keith Hughes said detectives talked to the man accused of looking in the windows. He told detectives he was there to pick mushrooms and was not looking in the window. The man had several mushrooms in his pocket.

Hughes said no charges are expected against the man who was on the school property.

Hughes said unless someone is in fear of their life, it's better to call police and let them deal with people suspected of crimes.
