PORTAGE | A homicide investigation was launched after police found a man dead next to a suspicious car Monday night.
People in the area called police around 5:48 p.m. after a gunshot was heard and a car was seen with its headlights on in the 2100 block of Crisman Road, according to a Portage police news release.
Officers responded to the call within minutes and found a man dead with a gunshot wound to his head, Portage Police Sgt. Keith Hughes said.
The man was found on the ground at the driver's side of the vehicle, the release states.
The vehicle was not registered to a Portage resident or the victim, Hughes said.
The 911 caller told dispatchers a person was seen running east along the railroad tracks just after the gunshot was heard, the release states.
Police established a perimeter and checked the surrounding areas with a police dog, but did not locate a suspect, the release states.
The Lake County Sheriff's Department also sent out its helicopter to assist with the search.
Police found identification on the dead man, and they believe he is a resident of Gary.
Detectives believe this was an isolated incident and that the victim may have known his killer, Hughes said.
