PORTAGE | Police said a man suspected of hitting his estranged girlfriend faces a long list of criminal charges after he ran from officers, kicked one of them and threatened physical harm.
Carl Blount, 23, of Portage, faces multiple battery, resisting law enforcement, intimidation and disorderly conduct charges.
Just before 6:45 a.m. Saturday, a Chesterton woman told Portage police she went to Blount's home in the 3300 block of Brown Street and found him on the porch talking to another woman who fled the area.
She said when Blount tried to "sweet talk his way out of things," they got into a heated argument and he slapped her. After slapping him back, she said Blount forced her into a chair and hit her multiple times.
Police said the woman had redness, swelling and bruising to her right eye, cheek and forehead and also had dried blood around her nose and a large bruise on her forearm.
Officers went to Blount's home and found him in bed. Police said he told officers the woman slapped him and left.
Police told Blount due to the woman's injuries, they were arresting him and while walking the handcuffed man to a police cruiser, he broke free and started running through a nearby brush field.
Officers eventually caught up with the man who reportedly kicked one of them, causing cuts on his arms.
While escorting him back to a police car, Blount threatened officers with physical violence, officers reported.
He was taken to Porter County Jail.
