PORTAGE | A Hegewisch-area man who stopped for gas on his ATV, then zoomed off after being approached by police, was arrested Tuesday night following about an hour on the lam, police said.
Simon Kovacevic, 35, of Chicago, faces false reporting, resisting law enforcement and public intoxication charges.
According to Portage police, just after 5 p.m. Tuesday, an officer assisting at a traffic stop on U.S. 20 at Willowcreek Road saw two ATVs pull into a nearby gas station.
The officer drove over and began talking to the three men. While relaying his location to dispatchers, the officer said Kovacevic took off on one of the ATVs, headed southbound on Willowcreek Road.
The officer began speaking to Xavier Lee, 26, of Chicago, who at first denied knowing the man who fled. When another man arrived at the scene, he was able to identify Kovacevic, saying he just purchased an ATV from him and Lee.
Lee was arrested and taken to Porter County Jail. He faces a false reporting charge, police said.
About 6:05 p.m., officers went to a house in the 2500 block of Dombey Road where they reportedly found Kovacevic standing next to a pickup truck. Police said the man bolted and an officer ran after him some 20 yards before hitting the man with a Taser.
Police said Kovacevic was then taken to jail.
