PORTAGE | A South Haven-area man faces resisting law enforcement and a series of drunken driving charges after he was reportedly found hiding in bushes after evading police.
According to Portage police, officers were called about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Central Avenue and Parkview Street for an argument. As officers responded, a caller said the men involved sped off in a pickup truck and a small gray car.
An officer said while looking for the vehicles, he saw a car going west on Central Avenue with its high-beam headlights on. He attempted to get the driver to dim them, then began following him.
Police said eventually the car pulled into a parking lot on the north side of Central Avenue near Charlotte Street and the passenger quickly bolted, running north.
The driver, Jacob McKay, 22, of Portage Township, then got out of the car and fled south, crossing Central Avenue.
An officer later found McKay hiding in some bushes outside a home in the 2600 block of Tecumseh Street. His eyes were reportedly bloodshot and watery and police said he smelled of alcohol.
He was found with a blood alcohol content of 0.10 percent, police said, and was taken to Porter County Jail.
The other man, whom police said McKay knew only as "Stoner," remains at-large.
