PORTAGE | A 29-year-old Portage man was arrested Monday night after police said he was involved in three car crashes while driving impaired.
Christopher Aimutis, 5273 Robbins Road, was charged with two counts of operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.
Police responded at 8:18 p.m. to the intersection of Willowcreek Road and Stone Avenue. Aimutis, driving an SUV, had already left the scene of that crash, according to police. Police found him to the south on Willowcreek Road where he allegedly had struck another car and then a telephone pole before stopping.
According to witnesses following Aimutis, they called police when he pulled out in front of them, disregarding a red light at the intersection of Vivian Street and Central Avenue. Aimutis then turned south onto Willowcreek Road.
The witnesses told police they saw him run into the back of a vehicle near Stone Avenue, continue southbound before striking a second vehicle and pole in front of the Portage YMCA.
A woman in the second vehicle was taken to Portage Community Hospital for back pain. Aimutis and a passenger in his vehicle also were transported to Porter Regional Hospital.
The passenger told police they had had a couple of drinks at a local bar and while driving, he had told Aimutis to slow down before running into the first car. Aimutis was looking at a text message on his phone when he hit the second car and then the pole, according to his passenger.
Aimutis allegedly told police he didn't know what happened, that "everyone just slammed on their brakes" and he wasn't sure what he hit with his car. He told officers he had consumed two beers and taken several medications.
