PORTAGE | Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect in an attempted theft from Wal-Mart last month.
A man attempted to steal 37 bottles of liquor from Wal-Mart, 6087 U.S. 6, about 4:30 p.m. Jan. 24 by concealing them in a blue plastic tote-type container and then pushing a shopping cart containing the tote out the front door, Portage police said.
A Wal-Mart employee called out for the suspect to stop, but he continued out the door. An unidentified male customer then intervened and escorted the man back into the store.
Wal-Mart personnel recovered the stolen liquor, which was valued at $866.45, but the men left the store in a reddish-colored unknown make sport utility vehicle prior to being identified. Portage police on Thursday released four surveillance images of the man.
Anyone who can identify the man in the photos is asked to call Detective Robert Shrader at (219) 764-5711 or the anonymous WeTip hotline at (800) 78-CRIME.
