PORTAGE | Portage police are working with Gary investigators in hopes of finding a person of interest in Thursday's homicide of a 72-year-old man.
"We definitely have a person of interest," Portage police Sgt. Keith Hughes said late Saturday.
Carl Griffith Sr., of the 2700 block of Locust St., was shot in the front yard of his home about 8 p.m. Thursday, shortly after coming home from work as a tow truck driver, police said.
Officials said he was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at Porter hospital in Portage. His death has been ruled a homicide.
Griffith filed a police report in Gary the same day he was shot and killed, Hughes said.
Gary police on Friday said Griffith went to the 3300 block of Kentucky Street after receiving a call from a woman saying she wanted to sell her car. When Griffith pulled up to the address, a man ran up to the tow truck, displayed a handgun and fired at Griffith multiple times until his gun jammed.
Griffith then drove away from the scene and filed a report with the Gary Police Department.
"We've been working with the Gary Police Department to find the person who shot at him there," Hughes said, saying police believe the fatal shooting may be related.
