PORTAGE | A Portage man is facing multiple charges after what started as a domestic incident Monday evening escalated into a fight with Portage police officers, breaking one officer's hand.
Kevin S. Budgin, 34, was charged with four counts of battery, resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and criminal recklessness following the incident at his home in the 2100 block of Gina.
Police were called to the home at 5:20 p.m. after Budgin allegedly got into an altercation with his fiance and their 15-year-old daughter.
The girl told police her father had been drinking, was angry at her mother and when she became involved, Budgin struck her on the head.
When police arrived, they found Budgin outside of the residence. Master Patrolman Bryan Slatton began questioning Budgin, according to the report, but Budgin refused to answer questions and became angry with the officer.
At one point, Budgin allegedly balled his fists and lunged at Slatton. The two continued in a physical altercation until other officers arrived and one officer eventually Tasered Budgin, who was then handcuffed.
Slatton's left hand was broken in the altercation.
After being medically cleared at Porter Portage Hospital Campus, Budgin, whose blood alcohol level measured .23, was taken to Porter County Jail.
