Members of the Port Authority assured about a dozen boaters Thursday that water levels should be sufficient in the Burns Waterway to access Lake Michigan.
"What we see right now, we got to stop the sky is falling thing. It's OK out there right now," said authority chairman Steve Nelson. "Right now everything is a go out there."
There had been concerns issued by some boaters along the waterway that the depth of water was too low.
Member Ray Blazek said soundings were taken in the waterway from the public marina to the mouth of the waterway prior to last week's snowfall. The measurements ranged from four-foot deep to 10-foot deep.
The shallowest areas indicate some silt build up.
Nelson said the Port Authority is responsible for the middle third of the waterway.
However, the authority announced if there are issues with larger boats not being able to make it to the lake, a refund process will be in place at the public marina for those who have paid their slip rentals in full.
Boating season officially opens April 1. There are 28 slips remaining for rent at the public marina and a dozen available at the city-owned yacht club.
