PORTAGE | The Board of Works on Monday approved two purchases of equipment for the Portage Fire Department.
The board approved the purchase of three heart monitors from Psysio Control, of Seattle, for $82,711. The purchase will be funded through a loan from the county.
Fire Chief Tom Fieffer said the three new heart monitors will be placed on ambulances. Each department apparatus carries a heart monitor, but the devices must be replaced every so often. Three current monitors are at the end of their life spans.
The new monitors are updated versions and have additional capabilities such as detecting cyanide poisoning.
Also approved was the purchase of 14 sets of bunker gear for firefighters. Cost is $2,013 per set and will be funded through the county economic development income tax fund.
Assistant Fire Chief Joe Calhoun said the gear will be purchased from Hoosier Fire Equipment, of Valparaiso.
A bid from MES, of Indianapolis, was lower at $4.30 per set. However, the bid was not as specific as the higher bid and the department would have had to pay shipping costs, which would have driven up the total cost for the gear, Calhoun said.
