PORTAGE | The Portage Board of Works approved the installation of storage tanks for the new Family Express gas station on U.S. 6.
The approval for the four tanks was contingent on review by the Portage Fire Department. The proposal must also be approved by the City Council.
Todd Etzler, an attorney representing the company, said construction could begin in 60 to 90 days on the gas station and convenience store at 5901 U.S. 6, just west of the old theater building.
In other business, the board approved a $1,500 settlement in a lawsuit brought against the city by the estate of Walter Saddler. The settlement was approved last month by the city's Advisory Claims Committee.
Saddler's family brought suit against the city in February 2011 after the 43-year-old man died, claiming the city was negligent in treating Saddler.
The board also approved the annual Memorial Day parade sponsored by the American Legion Post 260. The parade will be held May 27, kicking off at noon at the Portage Mall and traveling westbound on Central Avenue to Calvary Cemetery.
