PORTAGE | Don's Motel on U.S. 20 will soon be nothing more than a memory.
The Portage Redevelopment Commission opened bids from nine companies Wednesday for the demolition of the complex of motel units. The commission approved awarding the contract to the lowest and most responsive bidder pending engineering and legal review.
Mayor James Snyder asked the board to take expedited action without the customary tabling of the bids for a monthlong review. The commission purchased the property last year.
The likely contractor will be KLF Enterprises, of Markham, Ill., which provided a bid of $159,250. The other eight bids ranged from $173,260 to $393,500.
In other business, the commission tabled a request from Dennis Rittenmeyer, executive director of One Region, for a donation of $5,000 per year for five years.
Rittenmeyer outlined the work of One Region and told the commission his organization is seeking donations from each municipality in the region.
Snyder also accepted a letter from Portage Township Schools requesting the school district be exempt from any future tax increment financing districts. Snyder said the letter would be taken under consideration and discussed at the commission's next meeting.
