PORTAGE | The city's Redevelopment Commission this past week pushed several projects forward by giving its approval to seekĀ bids.

Bids are being sought for the $1.5 million construction project at Founders' Square Park just north of Central Avenue and west of Hamstrom Road in Portage.

The project calls for the construction of a splash pad and restroom/maintenance building at the park site, which is under the water tower. Also scheduled to be constructed are sidewalks, fencing and other amenities.

The commission also approved seeking bids for phase one of the development of city-owned property just south of the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk.

The project includes extending the entrance road from the park site south; providing additional parking; extending the trail from the pavilion to the South Shore train station and organizing the intersection on the west side of the Burns Waterway.

Construction costs are estimated at $1.5 million and construction could begin this summer.

Once completed, the project will provide additional parking for people going to the Lakefront and Riverwalk and will provide a walking trail from the train station to the lakefront. Nearly 300 additional parking spaces are planned for the area.

The commission also approved seeking bids for continued improvements to City Hall. This time the project will center on the east side of the building and will include handicapped ramps for the rear entrance, handicapped parking spots near the front of the building and repaving/repairing the parking lot.

The estimated cost of the project is $158,000.

The commission also will seek bidding on paving.

In particular, a bid will be sought to pave an alley directly north of the University Center, 6260 Central Ave. The alley had been paved with a base coat, but had not yet been finished with a surface coat.

Staff members were also directed to compile a list and seek bids for repaving of roads within the tax increment financing district overseen by the commission. The last will be brought back to the commission next month for action.
