Portage committee approves settlement against city, halting lawsuit

PORTAGE | The Advisory Claims Committee on Wednesday approved a settlement to head off a lawsuit against the city.

The committee approved paying $5,500 to Elias Sorrano-Velazquez to settle a claim filed against the city. Sorrano-Velazquez filed the claim following a collision with a garbage truck in September 2010, said City Attorney Gregg Sobkowski.

The claim will now go to the Board of Works for approval.

Sobkowski said the agreement to pay the claim does not acknowledge any guilt on the part of the city, but that it would be less expensive in the long run to pay the claim than to take the issue to court.
