PORTAGE | A Leslie's Pool Supplies Inc. will be joining Pet Supplies Plus in the former Walgreen's building at 6030 Central Ave.
The Development Review Committee on Tuesday approved changes to the south and east facades of the building to accommodate the new store.
Steven Earll of Chiodini Associates, representing building owner Mark Kahan, told DRC members that windows and doors will be added to the south and east sides of the building to accommodate the new retailer.
Work began on the exterior earlier this year when Pet Supplies Plus announced it would locate in about 8,000 square feet of the building. Leslie's Pool Supplies will occupy the remaining 3,500 square feet of space.
In other business, the DRC sent a site plan request for an addition and renovation of the Subway restaurant, 2674 Willowcreek Road, to the full plan commission for approval.
Portage architect Cleon Stutler, representing owner Ketan Patel, said plans call for nearly doubling the size of the 1,600-square-foot building with a 1,400-square-foot addition. It will house kitchen, storage and training areas.
In addition, said Stutler, the building will undergo a complete remodel with an upscale interior. They hope to begin work in November and complete the project in spring.
DRC members expressed a few concerns, including the location of the menu board causing traffic issues, landscaping, lighting and drainage.
It was suggested, and Stutler agreed to take the idea back to his client, to close off a drive on the western portion of the property. Neighbors on the street directly behind the restaurant had raised concerns about drainage. To alleviate that issue, they suggested the rear entrance be closed and that landscaping or a swale be installed as a solution.
