PORTAGE | The City Council approved an amendment to the new trash ordinance thatĀ could save some people money.

Previously, the ordinance stated any bulk item placed out with the trash on a non-amnesty week would garner a $100 pick-up fee.

Under the city's new trash system residents are limited to placing out one 96-gallon trash can per week. They are permitted to place bulk trash, not to exceed 40 square feet, out for pick up during the first week of the month at no charge.

Mayor James Snyder said that those who are placing bulk trash out on non-amnesty weeks are having their trash photographed and residents billed. However, he said he believes the charge may be excessive if a resident throws out something small like a mattress or night stand.

He suggested, and the council agreed, to amend the ordinance to charge residents only a $25 fee for throwing out bulk items smaller than 40 square feet during a non-amnesty week. Larger quantities of bulk trash will be charged at the $100 rate.
