PORTAGE | Portage firefighters are working to make sure residents are protected by smoke detectors.
Tuesday night firefighters knocked on doors to begin distributing 120 smoke detectors to areas of the city, said Division Chief Chris Kender, adding firefighters will continue to distribute the devices until they run out.
Kender said the department was contacted by the American Red Cross of Porter County which had received funding for the smoke detectors from ArcelorMittal.
Kender said the battery-operated smoke detectors were given to residents who did not have them in their homes. Firefighters also offered to come back later to help install the units if residents could not do so themselves.
