PORTAGE | The Fire Department, with support from Portage Firefighters Local 3151, Portage Kiwanis and Porter Regional Hospital will host a bicycle safety day to promote bicycle and general safety from 9 a.m. to noon June 29 at the east parking lot of Willowcreek Middle School, 5962 Central Ave.

The goal of the event is to teach children how important safety equipment can be and that wearing a helmet and other safety equipment can prevent debilitating injuries.

The department will give away free bicycle helmets to all children while supplies last. Other activities will include showing how to perform a bicycle maintenance check, registering bicycles and learning the "rules of the road" while riding through an obstacle course.

Participants are encouraged to bring their bicycles to the event.
