When I was young, we just hopped on our bikes and tore out into the street, off on another adventure. Now there are so many factors to consider when you send your kid out on a bicycle.
More cars on the road, drivers being distracted by phones, eating, etc. I’m not saying those things should be going on when driving but I think a child has a much better chance if they wear at least a helmet when they’re out riding these days.
An event this Saturday will help kids learn how important safety is and wearing a helmet and other equipment can prevent injuries while on their bicycle adventures.
Since the weather was so crazy a few weeks back in May the Portage firefighters rescheduled their annual Portage Fire Department Bike Rodeo and Safety Day. Again everything will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Willowcreek Middle School parking lot. Park in the parking lot between Ayelsworth Elementary School and Willowcreek Middle School and bring your bike.
The event includes a skills course designed to practice bicycle safety on a obstacle course and “learning the rules of the road." Free safety helmets will be given away and fitted for children without one while supplies last. Other events include showing the kids how to perform a maintenance check on their bicycle and registering bikes in case of theft.
Thanks goes to the sponsors of the event: Portage Fire Department, Portage Police Department, Porter Health System and the Portage Kiwanis Club.
So come on out and have a great, safe time and visit with all your favorite first responders and check out some of their great equipment too.
But hold on, that’s not all the Portage firefighters do in our fair city. The annual Portage Firefighters Local 3151 Scholarship Golf Outing will take place July 10. I have worked with this outing in the past and it is a really great time for all. The day starts out with a 9 a.m. shotgun start, golf scramble at Indian Ridge Golf Course in Hobart. The event costs $100 per golfer and includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, breakfast, hot dogs at the turn for lunch, beer, water and soda on the course and then a great dinner at Clancy’s Irish Pub in the Portage Mall. There will also be great door prizes and many raffles while you’re there.
This is a scholarship outing. The firefighters put it on every year to raise funds for deserving, graduating seniors at Portage High School. This helps our youth to get ready for higher education. For more information or a spot at the outing call (219) 762-7404. Portage firefighters rock!
