A Portage man accused in the death of an Illinois baby more than four decades ago has agreed to be brought back to Illinois to face the murder charge.

Gary Warwick, 62, waived extradition during a hearing Monday in Porter County, where he was arrested Thursday.

It's unclear how quickly he will be escorted to Illinois to face the St. Clair County murder charge related to the 1972 death of 1-year-old Joseph Henry Abernathy III.

Authorities allege Warwick was dating the child's mother but wasn't the child's father.

Warwick was charged in 1973 in the baby's death, but the case was later dismissed without explanation. Investigators haven't revealed what led to the new charges.

Warwick was assistant coach for the Purdue University North Central softball team before resigning last spring.

It's unclear if Warwick has an attorney.

He's jailed on $5 million bond.
