VALPARAISO | A 32-year-old Portage man was taken into custody this week on a year-old misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty on accusations of leaving a dog outside, without shelter for three days during the summer heat.
The accused was identified by police as Mark Zaragoza, of 2957 Elmwood.
Portage police said they were called July 19, 2011, in response to a report of what appeared to be an abandoned young pitbull dog at a home at 5592 Mulberry Ave.
The dog was excessively hot to the touch and barely moving, according to police.
The animal was contained to a fenced-in area that offered no shade, police said. Food and water was available, though police said the water bucket was of the type that could have easily been knocked over.
Zaragoza reportedly told police he had permission from his grandmother to live outside the residence.
