PORTAGE | An 18-year-old Portage man was arrested Tuesday night after he fired several gunshots near his home.
Charles R. Matheny III was charged with felony criminal recklessness.
A neighbor in the 1300 block of Nealon Drive called police just before 8 p.m., saying there was a man, later identified as Matheny, shooting a firearm in the direction of the man's house and toward nearby Bass Pro Shop.
The neighbor told police he saw Matheny standing at the end of his driveway, firing a gun. He also saw Matheny walking up and down the drive and, at one time, standing in the roadway, firing the weapon.
When police arrived, Matheny was inside his home. Police attempted to contact another man who lives at the home via the telephone, but got no answer.
The SWAT team was then activated. Matheny was seen through a window of the home, walking back and forth and, according to the report, wiping fog from the window.
Police were able to reach Matheny's mother. She told police he was home alone and she would have him leave the house.
A short time later Matheny was taken into custody and transported to Porter County Jail.
Police found nine spent shell casings in the area of the home's driveway. They also found a semiautomatic 9mm handgun inside the home.
