PORTAGE | A Portage man was arrested late Sunday night after he pulled a gun on a man and that man's child during an argument, police said.
Prezont Barnett, 27, was charged with criminal recklessness, intimidation, two counts of pointing a firearm, carrying a pistol with no permit, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.
Police were called to an apartment at 11:59 p.m. after a neighbor called to say he heard an argument, breaking glass, a threat by one man to shoot the other and then saw a man outside with a pistol in his hand.
When police arrived, they found Barnett outside of the apartment. He told police he had argued with a man, who was living with him, over some stolen items. Barnett initially denied any weapons were involved, but then told police he had taken his gun from his room to secure in his car.
The man told police he and Barnett were arguing over some items missing from the apartment a few days prior. When Barnett came home Sunday night, the argument continued. The man said at one point Barnett got a gun, continued to yell at the man to get out and began breaking items.
The man told police Barnett pointed the gun at him and at his son. The man began to gather items and Barnett started throwing items out the front door. The man was then able to lock Barnett out of the apartment with the gun.
Police later found the gun in a coat near the front door of the apartment.
While searching the residence, police found drug paraphernalia in Barnett's room. After being transported to Porter County Jail, authorities found what appeared to be a bag of marijuana in one of Barnett's pants pockets.
