VALPARAISO | Four boys and/or young men have come forward accusing Portage resident Christopher Truman of repeatedly sexually abusing them as children over a period of several years.
Truman, 37, of 1896 Center St., was charged Tuesday with six counts of child molesting and three counts of sexual misconduct with a minor. He is being held at the Porter County Jail without bond.
An initial hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday before Porter Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper.
Two of the boys, ages 16 and 13, told investigators the abuse occurred when Truman took them to Portage hotels, where they would swim, watch television and eat pizza.
The younger boy said he and Truman would wrestle after watching the sport on television. The boy said Truman took him to the hotel about three times a month since he was 7 and estimated Truman performed a sex act on him more than 100 times until he told his mother he no longer wished to go.
The older boy said Truman began molesting him two years ago at his house while his parents were home. He said the abuse occurred at home and at hotels while the two were watching wrestling on television.
A 21-year-old man told police Truman stepped in to fill the shoes of his absent father and routinely molested him between the ages of 11 and 17. The young man said he informed a family member of the abuse, but his claims were dismissed as nothing more than a way to seek attention.
The young man said he feels guilty about not telling more people about the abuse and potentially preventing the others from being harmed.
A fourth purported victim, who said Truman was close enough to his family that he referred to him as an uncle, said he awoke one night two years ago to find Truman molesting him. He said he resisted, but Truman forcibly kept up the abuse, which left him with bad dreams.
The allegations came to light Aug. 4 when Valparaiso police were dispatched to a disturbance and found parents of two of the boys attempting to confront Truman about abusing their children.
Truman is charged with three Class A felony counts of child molesting, each carrying a potential sentence of 20 to 50 years behind bars. He also faces one Class B felony (six to 20 years) and five Class C felonies (two to eight years).
