VALPARAISO | A Portage man was sentenced Friday to 84 years behind bars after being found guilty in September on four counts of molesting two young girls.
Scott Nicol will be required to serve 85 percent of the sentence because of the young age of the girls and the nature of the crime, said Porter County Deputy Prosecutor Tammy Gregg.
Nicol, who was sentenced by Porter Superior Court Judge Bill Alexa, was found guilty of molesting the girls during a period of January 2010 to August 2011 in Portage. One girl was 5 and 6 years old during the period and the other was 7 to 9.
The younger girl told jurors during the trial 54-year-old Nicol had taken her into a dark bathroom and made her perform a sex act on him. She also said he touched her inappropriately while she tried to sleep.
The older girl said she did not tell her mother about the abuse because she believed she would wind up in trouble, according to police.
The girls' mother told police she knew nothing of the abuse, but said the girls had exhibited behavioral issues. The older girl let her grades slip and began lying, she said.
