PORTAGE | A Portage man faces a list of charges after allegedly being caught rummaging through a vehicle and then trying to flee police.
Dominique D. Walton, 20, of 5588 Tulip Court, was arrested Monday night and charged with resisting law enforcement, fleeing law enforcement, possession of marijuana, public intoxication, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle and minor consumption of alcohol.
The incident started about 7 p.m. Monday when a resident of Brookline Drive called police saying he saw a suspicious man pulling on handles of vehicles in the area. The man followed the suspect, later identified at Walton, until police arrived.
An officer spotted Walton inside a car, allegedly rummaging through the vehicle and ordered him out of the vehicle and onto the ground.
Walton allegedly then ran briefly south toward Parkside. The officer fired his Taser, with probes making contact with Walton, but he continued to run.
The man who reported the incident grabbed Walton and pulled him to the ground. Walton allegedly continued to fight and the officer again administered a stun with the Taser to Walton, who eventually gave up.
Walton allegedly told police he was looking for his friend's car and ran because he was scared and didn't want to get into trouble. Police found a small baggie of marijuana on Walton and a portable breath test indicated his blood alcohol content level was .088.
