PORTAGE | The city could acquire two more properties on the north side of U.S. 20, but no decision has been made.

The Redevelopment Commission on Friday approved doing environmental studies on the two properties. They are the Smoke Shop on U.S. 20 just west of Samuelson Road and a bait shop on U.S. 20 about 200 feet east of Ind. 249.

John Shepherd, economic development adviser, said owners of both properties have approached the city to purchase the buildings and land.

The environmental study, which will determine if there are any environmental hazards associated with the properties, is the first step. Shepherd said after the studies are completed the city may move forward with the purchase or officials may determine they're not worth buying.

If the city moves forward, officials would have to have appraisals done on the properties. Shepherd said he wouldn't know the value of the properties until then and that the results of the environmental study may be a deciding factor on the value.
