PORTAGE | Charges are pending against a resident of an apartment in the 5500 block of Tulip Court after police discovered an alleged marijuana growing operation there.

At about 2 p.m. Wednesday, the Portage police SWAT unit, with the assistance of the Porter County Drug Task force, executed a search warrant on an apartment after receiving an anonymous tip about a possible marijuana growing operation.

Marijuana growing equipment, including fans, grow lights, air conditioners and pots; chemical growing agents; several marijuana smoking bongs and pipes and other assorted paraphernalia were seized, along with about 40 marijuana plants and about $1,000 in cash.

The 22-year-old resident of the apartment was not home at the time. Police are working with the Porter County Prosecutor's Office seeking charges of felony cultivating marijuana, felony maintaining a common nuisance and misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia against the resident.

"The Portage Police Department will continue to direct the focus of our efforts and resources on combating illegal drugs and on anyone who chooses to introduce them into our great community," said Police Chief Troy Williams in a department press release.
