PORTAGE | Portage police are investigating the Saturday night robbery of a liquor store on the city's west side.
An employee of South Shore Liquors, 5454 Central Ave., reported to police at 10:46 p.m. that she had been counting her cash drawer when a man entered the store.
The man, who was wearing a ski mask, ordered her to get on the ground. The man first took money out of a charity donation bucket and then grabbed the money from the opened cash register drawer. He also allegedly took the store's cordless telephone that was on the counter before he left.
He left with an undetermined amount of cash.
Portage police called in the Porter County canine unit to track the suspect, but his trail was lost on the north side of Central Avenue between Dombey Road and Hickory Street.
The store owner also told police on Sunday that he had found the telephone in bushes located on the west side of the store.
