PORTAGE | Police are investigating an armed robbery reported shortly after 9 a.m. Monday at the Chase Bank at 3275 Willowcreek Road.
Sgt. Keith Hughes of the Portage Police Department said a man came in, implied he had a gun and demanded money.
After receiving an undetermined amount of cash, the man left running south from the bank. Police said it is unknown if a vehicle was waiting for him after the heist.
Two Porter County Sheriff's Department police dogs and the Lake County Sheriff's Department helicopter assisted in a search for the suspect.
The suspect is described as a black male, in his late 30s to early 40s, wearing a white Purdue baseball cap, a black polo shirt and tan khaki pants, Hughes said.
Police said no weapon was ever seen and no one was injured.
Hughes said detectives believe the robber parked his car in the northeast corner of the old Kmart parking lot, walked north through a wooded area then made his way north and west to the bank.
Portage police and the FBI are conducting a joint investigation into the robbery and released several photographs of the alleged robber taken by surveillance cameras inside the bank.
Anyone who may be able to identify the suspect seen in the photographs, or anyone who saw a man walking along Willowcreek Road or near the former Kmart parking lot, is asked to call Portage Sgt. Nick Grynovich at (219) 762-3122 or FBI Special Agent Mike Peasley at (219) 942-4776.
