PORTAGE | Portage police are seeking the public's assistance in identifying a suspect in a recent theft case.

On Sunday afternoon, an employee of a restaurant on U.S. 6 reported someone had broken the window of her vehicle while it was in the parking lot and stole her purse which contained cash, debit and credit cards and other identification cards.

The credit card was then used at Walmart at about 4:45 p.m. to purchase a television. A second purchase was attempted at Walmart, but was denied.

The suspect was seen exiting Walmart near the garden center where she was picked up in a white Ford Taurus or similar vehicle. The television was placed in the back seat and the vehicle left.

The suspect also attempted to purchase three pairs of gym shoes at the Portage Kohl's at approximately 5:05 p.m., but that was also denied.

The suspect is described as a heavy set white woman in her 40s, about 5 feet tall with dark, wavy thick hair to her shoulders. She was wearing jeans and a grey jacket.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Detective Mike Vaughan at (219) 764-5705.
