PORTAGE | Application packets for the position of probationary police officer with the Portage Police Department will be available from 7 a.m.  Jan. 6 through 4 p.m.  Jan. 18.

All applications must be completed and returned to the police department no later than 7 p.m. Jan. 31. Applications are available at the Police Department, 2693 Irving St.

All applicants must be a U.S. citizen, be between the ages of 21 and 36 years at the date of hire, possess a valid driver's license, have a high school diploma or equivalent, have no felony or domestic battery convictions, have weight in proportion to height.

They must pass a written examination, physical standards test, memory test, medical examination, drug screen and psychological examination. They also must submit to a polygraph or voice stress analysis examination, background investigation and oral interview and complete basic instruction at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.

The 2013 salary for a probationary officer is $33,182. After one year of satisfactory service, the salary increases to $42,305.
