PORTAGE | Residents will get a chance to both learn about and offer opinions on the city's Highway 20 Corridor Plan during a public workshop next week.

The workshop will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the University Center, 6260 Central Ave.

In July, the city's Redevelopment Commission hired Houseal Lavigne Associates, a Chicago planning and design firm; Landstory, an Indianapolis landscape architectural firm and Abonmarch, a Portage engineering firm, to develop the U.S. 20 plan.

The purpose of the workshop, said Director of Public Works A.J. Monroe is multi-fold. Consultants will present the purpose of the plan, the process of its development and the timeline for its completion and then those attending will have an opportunity to voice their opinions or concerns and ask questions.

The plan will look at the development of U.S. 20 from County Line Road on the west to the Salt Creek bridge on the east and should be completed by mid spring, 2013.

Monroe said the plan will not only look at the future of the corridor, but will also look at opportunities available today for its redevelopment.

Monroe said the city has already moved toward that goal with the recent purchases of Don's Motel and Cast Away Motel on the west side of the city. Both properties will be razed and sold for redevelopment by private parties.

The public workshop will culminate a day, said Monroe, where consultants met with businesses in the morning and interviewed stakeholders in the afternoon. Monroe anticipated additional public workshops during the various phases of the plan's development.
