PORTAGE | The Portage Resale Shop is getting ready to move into a bigger location.
Executive director Brandon Miller said the shop, which is affiliated with all the churches in Portage, has been at its current location on U.S 6 and McCool Road in South Haven for six years.
"When we originally opened, we were in the Portage Mall and were paying $1 a year and then they tore it down," he said. "In our current location our rent is about $4,000 a month when you include property taxes."
The new location at 6450 Evergreen Ave. in Portage will not only be larger but also rent free.
"It is located north of the intersection of Airport Road and Central Avenue," Miller said. "It was originally the Portage YMCA and then for the 20 years it has been owned by Portage Christian Fellowship Church."
The church has given the building to the resale shop.
"We should be able to operate much more efficiently and a help a lot more people," he said. "The main floor is where the resale shop will be."
Miller hopes that they will be able to more to help more people.
"I envision much more in the future," he said, indicating other outreach programs could be housed there, like a food pantry or counseling center.
Currently the resale shop has 30 volunteers and not only sells items in the shop but they furnish all the the homeless shelters in Porter County, and when people leave a shelter they come there and shop free.
The group also gives away coats and has already donated 2,000 coats to people in need.
"We also take referrals for clothing through social service agencies and trustees office," Miller said. "We have become the ministry of stuff."
The group will be moving on Aug. 24 and they hope to move in one day but volunteers are welcome to help. The new building should be open Sept. 3. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
