PORTAGE | Portage Township vendors will get an edge when doing business with Portage Township Schools from now on.

The School Board on Monday approved a vendor price preference policy in line with state law that will give local businesses a boost in doing business with the schools.

Portage Township vendors providing bids for work within the school district will receive a 5 percent incentive on bids for jobs less than $50,000; a 3 percent incentive for jobs between $50,000 and $100,000; and a 1 percent incentive for jobs costing $100,000 or more.

To qualify for the bidding incentives, a business must have the majority of its employees residing in Portage Township and a majority of its payroll going to Portage Township residents.

In other business, Kyle Elementary School Principal Aris Psimos was recognized by the board. Psimos, a 40-year educator in Portage Township Schools, recently was presented with the Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year Award.

The board also approved a contract with Universal Seating, of Jacksonville, Fla., to refurbish the cafeteria at Portage High School West. The $159,961 contract, funded through the food service department budget, will refresh the tables, chairs and serving area in the cafeteria.

The board also approved a contract with K12 Solutions, of Houston, to purchase laptops and carts for each of the elementary schools. Each cart will contain 30 laptops. The cost is $119,961 and is funded through the School Technology Advancement Fund.
