VALPARAISO | A lawsuit accuses Portage Township schools and Fegely Middle School of negligence involving a 2012 incident of a student injured in class by a band saw.

The suit, filed by student Kristen Someson and her legal guardians, claim Someson had to undergo surgery and was left with permanent injuries after the saw blade cut her thumb.

Someson was told by her teacher at Fegely to use the saw Dec. 6, 2012, but the student was not adequately trained in safety procedures and was not properly supervised, according to the civil suit.

The suit further claims the schools failed to use available safety technology to avoid the injury.

The school system did not return a telephone call Friday for comment.

The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of money.
