PORTAGE | A Portage Township Schools committee will be working on developing a social media policy for students and employees.
Superintendent E. Ric Frataccia told School Board members this week that he is gathering sample policies, which will be reviewed by a District Quality Schools Team's subcommittee dealing with technology. The subcommittee, which includes Assistant Superintendent Tom Taylor and School Board member Jessica Bailey, will report back to the board.
"The board has been asking for this for a while," said Frataccia, adding that a recent incident at Fegely Middle School involving a teacher sending inappropriate text messages to former students, moved developing a policy up on the priority list. The teacher, who is facing several charges, has since been fired by the School Board.
Frataccia said the district's present policy regarding social media is not "wide enough or deep enough."
"We've got to do something to teach them (students) to do it right and to teach employees to do it right," said Frataccia after this week's School Board discussion meeting.
Frataccia also told the board it is important the district doesn't overreact to develop a policy too quickly.
"I've heard it and seen it done well other places," he said.
