PORTAGE | The streets and sanitation department was given approval by the Board of Works this week to seek bids on five new pieces of equipment.

That doesn't mean, however, that the city will be purchasing the three automated trash trucks, a street striping machine and a crack sealing machine, said Mayor James Snyder. The purchase will depend on the cost of the equipment and the ability to redistribute manpower in the department.

Assistant Street Superintendent Randy Reeder said presently the sanitation department has three trash trucks equipped with rear tippers which will allow for the pick up of the new trash totes when the new trash pick-up system becomes effective Feb. 4.

However, that equipment still requires the use of three personnel to operate, using a total of nine employees on three trucks.

If the city were able to purchase three new fully-automated trash trucks, only one person would be required for their operation, said Reeder. That would free up six department personnel to perform other tasks.

This year the city has contracted out services for both crack sealing roadways and striping roads. Those, said Reeder, are tasks city employees could do if they had the appropriate equipment and training.
