PORTAGE | Military veterans are invited to a free lunch this Veterans Day courtesy of Texas Roadhouse, 6130 U.S. 6.
The restaurant will open at noon Nov. 11 and will offer veterans a free meal, either from the early dine menu or a free sandwich, along with a beverage. The lunch will be served until 4 p.m.
"My dad was in the Army and has passed on. This is why this day is so special to me and why it makes me want it to be a special day for all our military personnel," managing partner Douglas Giltrap said.
In addition, the restaurant is taking donations that will be used toward Texas Roadhouse gift cards. The gift cards will be given to veterans in need.
Giltrap said employees plan to put up a special "Hero Tree" for veterans. It will be decorated in red, white and blue for the day. There will be pull-off cards on the tree on which guests can write a special message that will be distributed with the gift cards.
Local American Legion representatives also will be available to talk to veterans about how they can assist with their needs. Porter County Sheriff Dave Lain will sing the national anthem at 3 p.m.
There will be a banner for every veteran to sign. The banner will be displayed in the restaurant. A "Forget Me Not Table" also will be set up to recognize veterans who have died.
