PORTAGE | The Board of Works on Monday authorized spending up to $21,000 for additional trash and recycling bins.

Assistant Street Superintendent Randy Reeder said all households in the city now have one bin for each purpose. However, they have received requests for a second trash or recycling bin from some residents as well as requests for smaller, 64-gallon, versions of the containers.

Reeder said since the initiation of the new trash/recycling system, recycling has increased. At the end of January, the city was diverting 6 percent of its trash to recycling. That has climbed to 18 percent and Reeder said he expects the number to be 30 percent by December.

Reeder said they have received requests for about 150 additional full-sized bins, more than half for recycling. Residents will pay an additional $6 per month for a trash bin, but can have a second recycling bin at no cost.

He said they have also received 15 requests from seniors for the smaller trash and recycling containers.

Reeder said the $21,000 will provide about 300 96-gallon containers and 100 64-gallon bins to fulfill requests and to have additional ones on hand.

In other business, the board approved the purchase of a new ambulance from Lifestar Rescue of Van Wert, Ohio for $287,322.

They also approved the annual Right to Life march by the Nativity of Our Savior Knights of Columbus group on Sunday, April 7.
