PORTAGE | Eva Cloyd, Bookkeeper, for the Portage Township Trustee’s Office recently celebrated her 31st Anniversary with fellow staff members. Cloyd began her career with the Portage Township Trustee’s Office on April 29, 1982.
“It’s hard to believe it has been 31 years, time has gone by fast”, states Cloyd. Remarking on the growth and development of the Township through the years, Cloyd remembers back to when the Township’s first office was a rented house on Independence Avenue. “We didn’t have our own building yet, and there were several of us working closely in that tiny house. I remember doing all the books manually back then, too”.
Cloyd has worked for six Township Trustees including current Trustee, Brendan Clancy. She has seen the expansion of the Bonner Senior Center, building the South Haven Fire Department, building the Portage Township Trustee’s Administrative Building, the acquisition of both McCool and Blake Cemeteries, the donation of land from ANR Pipeline Company that is now Field of Dreams Park, and most recently the creation of the Portage Township Department of Parks and Recreation and the Friends of Portage Township Foundation, Inc. “When I first came to the Township, Schrock Cemetery was the only cemetery property we took care of”, states Cloyd, “now we have three”.
Cloyd remarked that she has met many people since working for the Township. Some friends and co-workers have left to go back to school, have retired, and some remain. Janet Clem, Bonner Senior Center Director, for instance, will soon be approaching her 25th Anniversary with Portage Township. “Not many of us long timers left; several have recently retired or passed away”.
Eva Cloyd and her husband, Steven, have raised their family in Portage. They have three children and eight grandchildren. “I love my job and our home, I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be or anything I’d rather be doing”.
