PORTAGE | The demolition of the Portage Yacht Club is nearly complete.

Environmental Cleansing Corp. of Markham, Ill., has been working to take down the building which is owned by the city's Redevelopment Commission. The demolition and clean up of the site should be completed by May 15, City Engineer John Hannon told the commission this week.

However, Hannon said, the 20 boat slips at the yacht club will continue to be used.

Hannon said originally the demolition contract had called for the reconnection of the utilities and lights for the docks. However, the company is unable to complete that work and Hannon asked the commission to authorize a budget of $16,000 to complete that work.

Hannon said seven of the 20 slips have been rented for this season. The work will include re-energizing the well and hooking up electric to those docks along with installing a couple of parking lot lights in the area.

The commission approved the work.
